Anyone interested in learning how to turn your ideas into projects for film and television? IC Studio is the place for you! Open to all majors, we will learn how to come up with ideas and create stories for our new television program—“IC Studio; Changing our world, one story at a time). Whether you are interested in comedy, drama, documentary or news, IC Studio is an opportunity to learn how Hollywood works (and sometimes doesn't work) and turn your ideas in to producible stories. We'll learn about the development, writing and production process and, you can get credit for participating in this innovative mini course.

2nd Annual Lambda Pi Eta Academic Paper Competition

It's time for the 2nd Annual Lambda Pi Eta Academic Paper Competition. If you have written a paper or created a project related to communications in calendar year 2008, please consider submitting it for this school-wide academic competition. We will be accepting past and present work.

A panel of Park professors will judge all entries, select three top submissions and provide feedback. The three winners will be recognized at a ceremony in March and at LPE's annual induction ceremony in April. The top submissions also will receive a monetary award.

If you are interested, please email lambdapieta@ithaca.edu and submit your work as an electronic attachment. You must include:

1. Cover page with your name and title of project

2. 100 word abstract

Academy-Award Nominated Filmmaker Frederick Marx to speak December 4

Thursday night, December 4 at 7:30pm Fred Marx, one of the co-creators behind the award-winning "Hoop Dreams," will be on campus to screen a rough cut of his new film, "17 Paths to Enlightenment," a chronicle of the struggles faced by young Tibetan children who make it their mission to spread awareness of their country's plight. As a bonus, he will answer any and all questions you may have about the film, the filmmaking process and his amazing and prolific career. This is an amazing opportunity to speak with an acclaimed, seasonal professional, and to get a glimpse of the filmmaking process in motion. The event begins at 7:30pm in the Park Auditorium.

Mini Course to be offered titled Radio Sales and Marketing

Susan Johnston, General Manager of the Cayuga Radio Group, will be offering a mini course titled Radio Sales and Marketing April 18, 19, & 20. Students will learn "everything they wanted to know but were afraid to ask" about the business of radio, from understanding the needs of the client to creating a media plan, proposal and creative presentation; students will also learn strategies that help local advertisers "ring their cash registers." Long-Time TV-R Professor, Howard Cogan, Passes Away at age 78

New TV-R Chair to start January 1, 2008
Dr. Nancy Cornwell will join the Television-Radio faculty as associate professor and chair beginning January 1, 2008. Dr. Cornwell is coming from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon where she is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Mass Communication. At Linfield, Dr. Cornwell is responsible for teaching video production, web design, media law, and the First Amendment. She will be teaching a section of Government and Media at the Park School next semester. Stay tuned for details on a meet-the-new-chair session in the spring semester.

2008 Olympics in Beijing
NBC Sports is coming to the Park School to recruit students to work as interns at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. You would be in China for 6 to 8 weeks, living in the international media village and working for NBC Sports, and returning to the United States in time for the fall 2008 semester.
Who:
Only juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. That means you need to be a CURRENT junior or a CURRENT senior to apply. (If you are a current senior, you would need to delay your formal date of graduation to August so you could enroll in an academic credit for the internship during the summer; all interns must be students. You would still participate in graduation in every way, but your official graduation date would be in August.)Freshmen and sophomores will get their chance in 2010.
Cost:
The total cost to interns will be $2500, which students will pay to NBC as a contribution toward expenses. That amount will cover all student contribution for transportation, housing, food, and whatever other fees or costs may be associated with the experience; NBC will cover the rest. All interns will travel to and from China together and will be part of an active and engaged internship program, with NBC staff serving as mentors. In addition, NBC Sports will pay for one academic credit for each student intern.Financial constraints should not prohibit any student from participating in this amazing experience. Students who are accepted to the internship program but who would find the costs prohibitive should let me know; we will find a way to make your participation possible.
What to do:
Fill out an application. Form can be downloaded (below), or pick one up in the Dean's office on the third floor of Park. You will need to fill the application out and return it to the Dean's Office on or before Monday, September 24, 2007.We will send all applications to NBC Sports, which will identify those students it chooses to interview.
When:
Five NBC Sports staffers will be on campus on October 24 and 25 to conduct interviews. We'll schedule those 30-minute sessions in early October. NBC Sports -- not the Park School -- will select the interns.

ABC Entry-Level Production Associates Program

ABC/Touchstone Television announces the 2007-2008 Production Associates program, a 12-month paid program for college graduates. Selected candidates are placed in entry-level positions in the production management areas of Touchstone Television in Burbank, California. TV-R Grad Wins Super Bowl Commercial Contest

Gino Bona, a 1995 TV-R graduate, has won the NFL's inaugural "Pitch Us Your Idea For The Best Super Bowl Commercial Ever. Seriously" contest. Bona's winning pitch, which can be seen online, will be made into a 30-second commercial that will air during the Super Bowl XLI broadcast on February 4, 2007.

Bona, who beat out over 10,000 other entrants, will travel to Los Angeles to watch his idea be filmed. He and a guest will also be guests of the NFL at Super Bowl XLI in Miami.

The two videos posted earlier were made by freshmen and sophomores in the video concentration in our Introduction to Field Production course.

Here is an example of work done by a senior audio student for Audio Workshop. We have an Audio workshop class for students in the audio concentration and a Video Workshop for students in the video concentration. These workshop classes are the capstone production courses - you get to use everything you've learned in your four years in the Park School - how to write scripts, edit, package.

This example is a recording about music and politics. Amanda Horning was student manager of VIC, one of the radio stations on campus. She graduated in May 2006.

Would you like to see the kind of work done by students in the Television-Radio department? Check out this video made by several students in the Introduction to Field Production course. They wrote the script, found music that we have the right to use in projects and on the web, shot all the video, did all the editing. This was just one of their projects this semester.

They call it the The Roy H. Park School of Communications Video Tour.

Do you have two minutes?

One of my students has created an online survey as part of an independent project about television viewing habits. It shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to complete. She's interested in attracting a wide variety of people - so feel free to tell your friends and family about the survey and ask them to take it too. The results are totally anonymous and will be reported only in the aggregate.

I'm making a presentation at the Higher Education BloggerCon in a couple of weeks about the use of podcasts to promote the Television-Radio department. There are lots of good topics being discussed over the next several weeks.

Turns out there are volunteer opportunities for college students at all kinds of conferences. I was just at the Game Developer Conference in San Jose. They had almost 300 college students volunteering - giving directions, helping keep panels on schedule, helping at meals. In exchange for working about 16 hours, volunteers got free passes into all of the conference - panels, meals, discussions, the exposition floor.

Here's a picture of some swag I got for being a speaker. Swag = "stuff we all get" - freebies. I also got a paddleball game, a notepad, some posters and stickers, and a Nintendo BrainAge t-shirt.

Here's the auditorium where the keynote speakers appeared. I got to see the producer of the new Battlestar Gallactica. They turned away hundreds of people (including me) for the president of Nintendo and Sony and for Will Wright.

One way to keep up with what's going on in the industry is to attend trade shows. I got a chance to go to the NATPE conference in Las Vegas in January 2006.

There were panels all day for 4 days, a trade show to explore, and tons of people to talk with and learn from.

The booths were for independent produers, people looking for content for their internet television subscription services, and big names like Carsey Werner and NBC Universal. There were many international content providers too - from Latin America and Asia for example.

College students can apply to be interns. They helped run errands and give directions. They also got to go to the panels and walk around the trade show floor. Being a NATPE intern is another thing you can look forward to as a Television-Radio student. Here's a pic of the intern office - notice the cool jackets.
